Mismatch

Morcombe and Wise, Little and Large, Zippy and George.

Nope, not the subject of my secret naughty fantasies, but perfect examples of mismatched couples; duos who seem less like ‘two peas in a pod’ and more like ‘turnips and grapes in a pillowcase’ – or something equally weird.

Despite their blatant differences, somehow, somewhere, somewhy, it works.

The great thing about my trip to Greece (see, told you I’d be banging on about it for weeks!) is that I got to meet so many new and unusual people – unlikely couples being the order of the day. Here is a small collection of the freaky pairs I had the ‘fortune’ to meet….

Mark and Gina.

She’s an ex-model with an ENORMOUS ego. Bolshy and interfering with a gob that never stops moving (can you tell I wasn’t keen?) He, on the other hand, is a charming, softly spoken gent who seems happy to roll through life humming along with the bees and generally being wonderful.

David and Alison.

One of them is short and fat with a bright ginger beard. David however, is strikingly handsome…

And finally Roberto and Pablo.

Roberto had my ribs snapping with laughter from noon till night, but when I found myself seated next to Pablo it was all I could do to keep my eyes open. Boring? Boring! He makes James Blunt sound interesting!

Being the thoughtful (well sometimes) and probing individual that I am I started to consider the oddities of these pairings (probably as a distraction from Pablo’s mind-numbing conversation) and, being the self-absorbed person that I am, I thought about how best to relate it to my own world.

My conclusion was basically this – similarity is not necessarily the path to every-lasting happiness. Ok, so someone who mirrors your loves, life, looks, might be the right person for you, but if you overlook the people you consider ‘odd’, just because they are different to you, there’s every chance you could be missing out on the true love of your life.

If this holiday has taught me anything it’s that love comes in many forms – loud and gobby, small and bearded, grey and dull – who knows, any one of these types could be the ideal partner for you or me, because in this crazy mad world it seems you just cannot predict who will make the perfect match.
