Mark Curtis, Flirtomatic

At Flirtomatic, we’re constantly being asked for our thoughts on mobile chatting, flirting and dating, so we thought it was high time we told you!  Kicking things off is our very own CEO, Mark Curtis.  Trust us folks you’re in for a treat!

Here’s a snippet of what he’s been thinking about lately…

Running Flirtomatic for the last few years, a few truths about the sexes have come home to roost: specifically the differences between men and women. Over and over again, we see people behave the same way on a flirting site as they do in “real life” (that’s because increasingly this is real life). Why should this be? Because we are all driven by our genes, which in turn have been shaped by millions of years of evolutionary pressure (not just in my view).

Examples? Proportionately men send many more gifts than women, but women spend more on checking their ratings and are more energetic in their requests for ego boosts. Women also chat way more than men – and expect longer and more interesting conversations than men are always prepared for. If evolutionary theory is right – it’s all because men are in a numbers game, but women look for quality. Does that sound like a gene pool market where there is a mismatch between buyer and seller? Yup, and if you wish to win it’s as well to build your strategy around it.

But I like to think Flirtomatic is more than that. We asked our customers recently what they most like about Flirtomatic – and “fun” came out at number one (76% of you said this…..). Dating may well be an instinctive human activity that dates back to way beyond the cave but that doesn’t mean it can’t be deeply entertaining.

Which is where Buzz Lightyear comes in. Last week my son turned four years old. We gave him a Buzz Lightyear for his birthday. He (it?) speaks, sends laser beams deep into the hidden corners of wardrobes and thinks he can fly. At least he has wings. And for now at least, he never leaves my son’s side. As far as I can tell ALL four year old boys LOVE Buzz Lightyear. Then I found myself wondering, why not Woody?

After all Woody is the hero, is a much more rounded guy than Buzz, is sympathetic to others, a leader, successful (he has the most screen time and in the end never lets others down) and in Jessie wins the best looking and most interesting girl in the films (unless you’re Ken or have a thing for dumb shepherdesses). Woody is top of the gene pool in toy terms. And he’s a cowboy which is pretty cool too.

But if you’re a four year old boy, all this counts for zip. You want to be Buzz – deluded, emotionally one dimensional, a poor conversationalist.

So I started to wonder, at what age do we males grow up and want to be Woody? Um, it turns out, we don’t. At least according to my limited but highly scientific research. I asked all the men in the Flirtomatic offices – “if you could be Woody or Buzz, which would you be?” Almost all said Buzz. Most without a second to think about it (I can’t help feeling that Woody would have paused for thought). The only men who wanted to be Woody were older, and did take time to think. I asked one why – his (in evolutionary terms rational) response was that Woody gets more chicks. I’m not sure the younger guys saw this, and indeed the younger they were the faster they answered.

Then I turned the question round, and asked all the girls in the office – “if you had to date Buzz or Woody, which one would you pick?” Guess what – the vast majority picked Woody. Even one who picked Buzz changed to Woody when I changed the question to which one would you marry? All of them took longer to answer than the men……

There you have it: men want to be a Buzz when they are little boys and struggle ever to move on to the Woody level. Women want a Woody. The market is mismatched, and that’s where the fun starts!

Since the kind people at The Mobile Entertainment Awards had nominated us in the category for Best Social Network, we thought it would be rude not to pop along.  We were seated with the lovely lot from Shazam and a good time was had by all.  Trust us when we say that they certainly know how to throw a party, here are the pictures to prove it…

Now our boys, whilst typically dashing of course, look even more gentlemanly in this, the month of Movember. That’s right, it’s a big thing here at Flirtomatic HQ, where if you’re not sporting the Tom Selleck, well then something’s not quite right (and that’s just the girls!).

As far as the awards are concerned, sadly we lost out to a little company called Facebook, but hey, we wish them the best of luck.  We can comfort ourselves with the knowledge that if the award had been for best ‘tache’, then we’d definitely have won it!

Flirtomatic has been shortlisted as a finalist for the ME Awards 2010 (that’s the Mobile Entertainment Awards to you and me), in the category of ‘Best Social Media Company’!  Needless to say, we’re over the moon. We were fortunate enough to win this coveted prize last year and are thrilled to be in the running once more.

We’re facing some pretty stiff competition but we’re dedicated to bringing our users the most entertaining and innovative mobile service possible and will continue to strive to do so.  Flirtomatic is here to make flirting, dating and meeting people fun and easy – like Cupid’s younger, flirtier brother.
